from/my/collection: Jaeger-LeCoultre E159s and E109

Why would anyone buy three times the same watch? Why would any normal person have three watches overall? Yes, watch collectors are not normal people. Besides, they are not the same at all. Similar, I admit, but not same, so always a good reason to collect the variants of a watch.

Back in the 1940s/50s watches were a lot smaller than they are today even nowadays modern watches are sizing down (see the new Lange 1815 in 34mm case). These JLCs, some call them military watches, have a 33.5mm case, but don’t be fooled, they wear well in size due to the tapering lugs and the large crown. The version with central seconds is typically a E159 while the small seconds version would be an E109. All of them have snap-on case backs. Some other models also had screwed case backs but then with a different Reference number.

The E159 above with outer minute track and long seconds hand started it all for me. The luminous numbers from 1 to 12 and the blued radium-filled hands are so cool and from another era.

Almost same, at least very similar is this E159. Here the minute track is inside the numbers and the seconds hand is short to go as far as the minute track. It gives it quite a different look.

Last but not least, we have an E109 with small seconds. Also featuring an inner minute track but of course small seconds at 6. This dial has no numbering at the small seconds, while most have a 60/15/30/45 printed.

I also have another E109 with black dial and small seconds which is with the watchmaker. Hello, Watchmaker: when will it be finished???? Always the same, it takes forever.
