I think it is time to take a fresh look at my Girard-Perregaux WW.TC Tribute to John Harrison, Ref. 49870. Why? Simply because it is an outstanding and very rare watch and I just paired it with a new sand coloured suede strap. I think that strap combination gets me ready for the summer. Very much like the look of it.
The WW.TC John Harrison is a very special watch from GP and I consider it as my signature watch as it represents everything I want from a watch. First it is a Girard-Perregaux. Second it is a tribute to one of the greatest minds in watchmaking, John Harrison and third it is a watch that took me a lot of effort and perseverance to get.
It’s 41 mm white gold case is not small but the right size for a World Timer and provides enough room for the hand-painted enamel inner dial depicting the journey of John Harrison’s son with the H4 marine chronometer. It was a limited edition to 50 pieces, a number that is worth the name “limited edition”. Each one of the 50 watches is also somewhat unique as the enamel hand-painting is always slightly different on every model.
What I find quite interesting and which also makes this watch quite unique is its relative rareness. Why relative? Well, I bought this watch almost 8 years ago. Since I’m collecting watches, if I recall right, I only ever saw 3 watches offered and the one I bought 8 years ago, was the last one I saw. Since then not another single WW.TC John Harrison has come for sale, which can only mean that the lucky 50 owners really hang on to it forever. I really like that.
