Today I start a week of Gyromatics. Until Friday, I will feature a different Gyromatic every day and today we start with the Girard-Perregaux Gyromatic 7199. At the end of this series, we will look a bit closer at the Gyromatic mechanism and why it is so special. This watch is a fairly recent addition to my collection and is the sibling of Ref. 7046, which was one of the first Gyromatics with Caliber 21 and dates back to the mid 50s.
Reference 7199 has the same case and dials but an added date window at 3. As such it comes with Caliber 22, which is the same as Caliber 21 but with date mechanism. The most interesting part here is the case. Square with special cushion-shaped angles and relatively think. It provides great presence on the wrist and has that extra vintage charm. A small little stunner.
