watches/not/gp: Vacheron&Constantin 7373

For quite some time I have been admiring the Vacheron Historiques 1921 American, still in the current collection. The cushion case and the 45 degree tilted dial driver style is just something special. Unfortunately, it is quite a bit out of reach at the moment, at this very long moment. So when I came across this cushion-shaped vintage VC Ref 7373, I had to have it.

At first sight, we have a very simple, very small watch that by today’s standards would be a Ladies watch even the size trend is going to smaller watches for men. It measures only 30 x 30mm but it is not a round watch, hence it appears larger on the wrist. In addition, and that is often overlooked, the proportion between thickness and case size is very important. In this case, we should talk about thinness. With that the proportions are perfect, the ultra-thin case in a compact diameter. It does not feel undersized at all.

An ultra-thin watch also needs an ultra-thin caliber and here we have THE ultra-thin caliber, Caliber 1003 with just 1.64mm thickness. A little mechanical marvel with true old-school craftsmanship making such small and thin calibers. And with any VC caliber, it is finely decorated even it is hidden under a solid case back.

So while I continue to dream of a 1921 American, I truly enjoy this little vintage watch for everything that it represents.
